Why Your Boss Might Remind You of Your Mum (and Other Workplace Mysteries...)

Hey there!

How's your week been? I hope it was both productive and enjoyable.

Personally, I went back to school. Well, sort of.

I spent a couple of days diving into Transactional Analysis, which is a fascinating way of understanding why we all communicate the way we do (and why we sometimes get stuck in the same frustrating patterns).

Turns out, we all have three main "ego states" running the show:

1. Parent – The bit of us that nags, nurtures, or tells people off for not washing their coffee cups.

2. Adult – The rational, problem-solving, "let’s just deal with this" part (which we probably all wish we used more often).

3. Child – The playful, creative, but sometimes sulky or rebellious voice in our heads (the one that secretly wants to reply to emails with "MAKE ME").

These roles play out all the time in life and particularly in the workplace. Ever noticed how you suddenly feel like a teenager when your boss tells you to "be more proactive"? That’s TA in action!

Now, imagine what it would be like if you were actually aware of this happening before you fell into the same old patterns. What if you could spot when you were about to slip into "frustrated parent" mode with a colleague? Or recognise when someone else was reacting from their "rebellious teenager" state? Imagine being able to choose a different response - one that actually got you the result you wanted instead of the usual workplace drama.

That’s why this stuff is so useful. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it, and that means you can start making small, smart changes that add up to better communication, fewer headaches, and a more productive, enjoyable workday.

I am obsessed with how understanding ourselves and others will make all of our working lives easier. That is why we are bringing exactly this kind of content into our employee training workshops - helping you recognise these patterns, shift them when needed, and create real change in how you work and lead.

If that sounds like something you (or your team) could use, let’s chat. I promise not to analyse you too much!

Have a lovely week!
