The Impact of Low Manager Engagement

Hi there,

I wanted to share something really interesting that I read this week.

The Gallup State of the Global Workplace report landed in my inbox yesterday, I was on the train back from a training session. I opened it despite the nightmare of South West Train’s wifi, and one stat stopped me in my tracks.

Workplace engagement across the globe has dropped to 21%! And here in Europe? It’s just 13%!

And if you’re wondering what ‘engagement’ actually means, it’s about how connected, motivated and valued people feel at work. It’s not just showing up and ticking the boxes. It’s showing up because you care.

And, here’s the biggie: It’s not new joiners or execs driving the drop - it’s managers. Especially younger and female managers.

To be honest, it didn’t come as a huge surprise. Back in 2022, we delivered our own research at PUSH that found that over 75% of managers were battling stress, burnout and a growing sense of isolation.

And the ripple effect has been massive. Managers are the heartbeat of a team. They shape culture and influence performance. They can be the reason someone stays - or quietly checks out.

So if your people strategy isn’t prioritising your managers, it’s probably not working as well as it could be.

I know you’re busy, so here are three small but powerful things to reflect on this week:

1. Check in with your managers - not just about performance, but how they’re really doing

2. Create space for connection, not just output

3. Remember: when managers feel supported, they’re far more likely to support others well

Here’s the Gallup report if you’d like to dig into the details - it’s a really valuable read.

And as ever, if anything here resonates or you’d like to talk it through, just book in a call.

With love and energy,

Cate
